Hen’s Teeth is excited to announce a new set of events which showcase new music, and the remarkable handmade sound systems of Toby Hatchett, with Cloud Castle Lake opening the series.

First Listens is a new series of events offering an opportunity to hear, first-hand, the incredible quality of sound which Toby’s systems produce, and the music some of our favourite artists create. Taking place at 13 Fade Street, Hen’s Teeth invites audiophiles and music lovers to take part in this superior sound experience.

Long-term This Greedy Pig collaborators, Cloud Castle Lake will open the series, with a first-listen of their new debut album, Malingerer, on April 19, one day ahead of its official launch. Toby’s incredible systems are perfectly suited to Cloud Castle Lake’s haunting, instrumental work, and they showcase Daniel McAuley’s beautiful vocals beyond comparison.

At this exclusive first-listen of Malingerer, ahead of its official launch, the album will be played through in full on vinyl, and there will an opportunity for attendees to purchase a copy in-store. The band will also take part in a Q&A session ahead of the listen-through.

Handmade to order in his Cork studio, Toby’s sound systems are both impressive pieces of audio kit, and beautiful additions to any home or office, with their hints to mid-century interior design, in finishes such as birch ply and formica.

These amps and speakers offer a new, higher level of sound quality for listeners. With Toby’s system, it is now possible to easily hear previously unheard details in tracks, such as the plucking of individual guitar strings, the placement of musicians in a studio, and the unique qualities of a singer’s voice.

“We’ve been waiting to show Malingerer to people for ages and there’s no way we’d rather do it than surrounded by pals in a space like Hen’s Teeth.” – Brendan Jenkinson, Cloud Castle Lake

“This sound system unlocks music. It means you can hear it the way it was designed to be heard; it is crisper and cleaner, with greater depth to the sound.” – Toby Hatchett

About Cloud Castle Lake
Dublin-based four-piece Cloud Castle Lake make beguiling, complicated and bold compositions. They share a common ambition to push the lens of live performance wider, to go outside the constrictions set by genres, and to explore beyond traditional sonic structures. Lead vocalist, synth player and lyricist Daniel McAuley (27) met bassist Rory O'Connor (27) and guitarist/pianist Brendan William Jenkinson (27) in boarding school in County Kildare, and started a band as “a minor act of rebellion”. Via local battle of the band contests, however, it soon dawned on them that what they'd conjured together out of a mutual affection for Radiohead and Sigur Ros, Aphex Twin and Björk, was really working. Cloud Castle Lake's music juxtaposes lyrical darkness and despair with an almost euphoric catharsis. Newest recruit – drummer Brendan Doherty (22) – joined the band only two years ago, and has been instrumental in evolving their sound from the post-rock leanings of their 2014 debut LP Dandelion to something more jazz-inflected, electronic and liberated on their forthcoming follow-up album Malingerer, which itself draws on different influences, and American jazz composers such as Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders.
