For the month of April, 2018, the Hibbleton Gallery film series will explore the complex and politically-charged topic of immigration from Latin America to the United States. All screenings begin at 8pm and are free and open to the public. A discussion will follow each screening.
On April 21st we'll be showing "Harvest of Empire: The Untold Story of Latinos in America" (2012) based on the book by Juan González, directed by Peter Getzels and Eduardo López. Examines the role of the US military and economic interventions in Latin American countries, and the surge of migration this has caused from those nations to the US. The film documents the wars fought by the US resulting in colonial expansion into Puerto Rico, Cuba, and over half of Mexico, as well as covert US actions to install dictatorships in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador—all of which directly led to immigration to the US.
