The Highland Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and the Triad Chamber Orchestra invite you to “Endings and Beginnings” on Sunday, April 29. The concert will take place at 7:00 p.m. in Highland’s Sanctuary and features two stunning and thought-provoking works from the 21st century. James Whitbourn’s Son of God Mass for saxophone, choir, and organ is a contemporary work of joy, beauty, and contemplation. The program also includes the Southeastern U.S. premiere of Scott Perkins’ A New England Requiem for chorus, soprano soloist, and chamber orchestra. This will be the second performance the work has received, following last year’s premiere in New Haven, Connecticut. Combining the traditional words of the Requiem Mass with 19th-century New England writers Hawthorne, Longfellow, Sigourney, and Dickinson, this haunting piece unites the past and present in a timely way.
The concert features the 44-voice Chancel Choir, the professional musicians of the Triad Chamber Orchestra, organist Henry Tysinger, saxophonist Nicolas Lira, and soloists Miriam Preston Davie and Mary McElwee Mendenhall. The concert will be conducted by Nathan Zullinger, Highland’s Director of Music.
A free-will offering will be received. The performance will last approximately one hour. For more information, contact the church at (336) 724-6303. The church is located at 2380 Cloverdale Avenue, Winston-Salem.
