As you're training for an endurance swim and using a pool (please don't tell us you're in the lake in April!) it's easy to take a short break/breath at the end of the lane with out even knowing it.
For a 1 mile swim, thats 66 extra breaths (33 laps).
When you're in the open water you don't want to feel tired or out of breath. By learning the flip turn and utilizing it during your practice you will be able to more efficiently use your work out time and gain some endurance.
