Spa City Blues Society presents this free blues event as part of Art Springs, at Hill Wheatley Plaza, May 5th, 6-9 pm. These exciting blues groups will get your foot tapping and your jive jiving as the sun goes down on a day celebrating the arts.

Spa City Blues Society’s Blues In The Schools Program

The Spa City Blues Society’s Blues In The Schools (BITS) program is a non-profit program for youth ages 12-21 that exposes them to all aspects of a truly American art form - Blues music. Students are taught the history of the blues and given the opportunity to learn to play the instrument of their choosing. Instrument is provided whether the student can afford their own or not. Local musicians donate their time and skills to teach and mentor the youth involved in the program. The program also offers students a chance to perform publicly in many different venues, festivals and events.

The BITS Band is: lead guitar and vocalist Clarke Elmore, age 14; vocalist/rhythm guitar Kymberly Stanek, 15; bassists Marston Murdock, 16, and Amanda Doyle ,14; musician-at-large Elijah Williams, 15; and drummers Jackson Victorian, 17; Tobias Mendenhall, 17; and James Ballard, 12. These young people continue the blues tradition with a mix of classic and contemporary blues that will make everyone want to listen to the blues!

Trey Johnson & Jason Willmon

Trey Johnson (Prescott) and Jason Willmon (Bauxite) have a brand of blues that is all their own. The duo finished in the finals of the International Blues Challenge a few years ago. Their music is upbeat foot stomping music that’s good for whatever ail’s you. From singer/songwriter to hardcore folk blues they are a cornbread salad of everything you love!

L’il Skinny & The Roosters

L’il Skinny & The Roosters consists of Ethan “L’il Skinny” Kuntz on vocals/guitar; Michael Shipp on bass/vocals and Peyton Shipp on drums. These three top notch musicians come together to form a rocking power trio with music that ranges from classic and southern rock to blues.

Ethan "Lil'Skinny" Kuntz is an 18 year old guitar prodigy from Murfreesboro, will bring his soulful sound of southern rock & blues to the stage. Ethan was featured on Season 15 of American idol and earned a trip to Hollywood. Since airing on idol, Lil'Skinny has been busy performing all over the southern states bringing his love of Texas blues, southern rock & his own mix of originals to audiences. Ethan has drawn comparisons to Jonny Lang and John Mayer.

Michael Shipp is a veteran guitar slinger with both Arkansas and Texas roots. He has worked with many great musicians and Hall of Fame artists in the studio and on stage. A longtime friend of actor/musician/producer Billy Bob Thornton, Shipp and Thornton have worked on several projects together spanning nearly 40 years. In 2003, Shipp released a solo CD, Adventures of Roosterboy. The independent release gained some pretty significant attention and sold in Europe and North America. In between, Shipp worked on several projects and world tours with Thornton’s projects, and was an original member of Thornton’s current band, The Boxmasters, which began in 2007. In 2012, Shipp and Thornton co-produced Shipp’s most current CD, Crow Loudly at Thornton’s Los Angeles Studio, The Cave, that once had belonged to Slash of Guns & Roses fame. Crow Loudly included several Shipp originals and a few cover tunes Shipp and Thornton chose from a list of influential artists they loved. The sessions included a who’s who of guest artists on various songs including Thornton throughout on drums and backing vocals, ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill, Ricky Medlocke from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pat Travers and several other rockers. Both of Shipp’s CD’s combined have sold in over 30 countries worldwide and has had critical acclaim from reviewers throughout the USA. Shipp has a son, Peyton, who is a phenomenal drummer and certainly can steal a show.

At only 14 years old, Peyton “L’il P” Shipp is turning the heads of many professional drummers several times his age. A comment often heard is “he plays like an old soul”, reminding audiences of the great John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. With a musician dad, Peyton was influenced early on by ZZ Top’s Frank Beard. Said Actor/Musician/ Billy Bob Thornton, “I don’t know how a kid this age can play so well. Instinct has to be the answer.” Other influences have included many classic rockers including Buddy Rich. It is not possible to watch young Peyton Shipp perform in concert without locking into his amazing talent well beyond his years.

Teaming with 18yr. old guitar slinger Ethan Kuntz, and Roosterboy on bass, along with 14 year old Peyton Shipp on drums, a rocking power trio, LIL’SKINNY & THE ROOSTERS has been formed. Roosterboy Michael Shipp hopes to continue working with this power trio and performing live with these young guns is certainly and enjoyable task.
