This worship service commemorates the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It will be a tenebrae service, which is a Latin word meaning "darkness." As we read through a biblical account of what happened the night Jesus died, we will gradually extinguish candles on the altar. The increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus' death of hopelessness in the world without God.
This is a combined worship service of Church of Peace UMC in Richfield, Hillcrest UMC in Bloomington, and Portland Avenue UMC, so our music will be provided by a combined choir. Note this will take place at Hillcrest UMC (9100 Russell Ave S), and is open to everyone. It's a meaningful worship service on the way to Easter.
