The Hilliard Division of Police will host its Third Annual Autism Awareness Open House on Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Safety Services Building, 5171 Northwest Parkway.
This event, which takes place days after World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, provides participants the opportunity to socialize with First Responders and to see police cars and Norwich Township fire trucks, as well as police and fire gear, in a calm and reassuring environment. Families, children and adults on the autism spectrum are welcome to attend.
The event is not only beneficial for those on the spectrum, but for law enforcement, as well. Police are trained to respond to a crisis situation with a certain protocol, but this protocol may not always be the best way to interact with those individuals. The event allows for positive relationship building between First Responders and those on the autism spectrum.
This event is free to the public.
