Curious George is the most popular monkey in the world. Since the first publication in 1941, the beloved book series has sold over 75 million copies in over 25 languages. George has become a cultural icon, jumping off the pages of the books as an international TV and movie star. The story of his creators, Hans and Margret Rey, however, is still largely unknown. The Reys were a husband and wife team, German Jews, global refugees, and immigrants to America. On makeshift bicycles carrying the original Curious George manuscript, they rode across Nazi occupied Europe in search of free.
Using animation, archival materials, and interviews, Monkey Business: The Adventures of Curious George’s Creators explores the extraordinary lives of the Reys, who were as curious and adventures as George himself.
