About the author and the book:

Jared Paul is a two time Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist and has been a featured poet at the Greenbuild International Conference & Expo, the Post Secret national book tour, South By Southwest Music Festival, and Net Roots Nation. Having toured internationally in over 200 cities throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe playing alongside legendary poets, musicians, journalists, and speakers such as Amy Goodman, Saul Williams, Bill Clinton, Sage Francis, Our Lady Peace, Paul Hawken, Jello Biafra, Immortal Technique, Anti-Flag, Atmosphere, The Misfits and many others, Jared is widely recognized as one of the premiere performance poets in the world.

"Songs From the Bottom of a Mineshaft," is a home-cooked meal made on an open fire. Paul’s work is a raw and resilient blueprint. His stories of poverty and artistry, protest and prison, weave the melancholy and hope of the American narrative. A testament from a true American activist, Jared Paul’s gritty collection of poems and essays are a tribute to pulling up your sleeves and learning to use your hands as a shovel. This lyrical memoir sings prayers of protest that echo from empty boxcars and the faces of familiar strangers.
