Here is a description of what Best Buddies do at their school
Everybody needs a friend. But not everybody has one. It can be very hard for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to make connections on their own. So Best Buddies matches them with a peer volunteer to form a "buddy pair". New friends open up a whole new world of opportunities! And donations from people like you and me make local Best Buddies programs possible. Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to inclusion of those with disabilities.
Our middle school chapter at White Station meets monthly to allow social opportunities for our friends with disabilities. This year we have gathered for ice cream socials, mock Winter Olympics, paint parties and community outreach programs where we collect food or make holiday cards for homes that accommodate adults with special needs. It’s important for the social opportunities to also be lessons in giving back!
Something important to us in fundraising is to have the children earn their donations. This year they have painted and sold art work, baked cookies, made homemade dog biscuits, held garage sales, held lemonade stands; anything they can do. We love our Buddies and we want to continue growing our chapter!
