Spring is here and our galleries are filled with new art! Join us for the opening reception for new works by Bloomington artist Drew Etienne, the winners of the College Invitational call out, and by our students from the 26 different ArtReach locations we travel to every year.
Drew Etienne: Artificial Dimensions
Etienne’s years living near the Appalachian Trail by a power plant are apparent in many of his paintings. In Artificial Dimensions, he merges recognizable landscapes with imagined geometric abstracts, creating new fields and interrupting the romantic projections we associate with landscape painting. Etienne’s goal is to create compelling, mysterious spaces that activate the viewer’s desire to investigate.
During the 2016 Exhibition Art of the Heartland, an exhibition that featuring works of art by artists residing in the Midwest, Etienne was one of two artists who received a Director’s Choice Award. As part of the award, Etienne was asked to return to the Indianapolis Art Center for a solo exhibition.
Elise Howell: From Root to Petal
Root to Petal celebrates the chaos and the mundane tasks associated with motherhood. Scattered toys, piles of laundry, dirty dishes and other misplaced objects are the subjects, drawn whole or in part with a simple contour line. Howell introduces gestural painting marks that work as quiet spaces and visual counterpoints to the linear work, depicting emotional and physical interruptions of domestic life.
This exhibition features work from artists currently enrolled in undergraduate and graduate art degree programs throughout the state of Indiana. Through an open submission process, the Art Center’s exhibitions team selected students to receive exhibition space. Artists featured: Aaron Dodd, Alex Mikev, Sarah Anderson, Angela Frezza, Aram Bea, Ashton Boehman, Christian Bowden, Cody Coffman, Colleen Deignan, Danni Xu, William James Lupkin, Kassie Woodworth, Kerrigan Clark, Teddy Lepley, Logan Gainey, Luke Huling, Meghan Hennessy, Nicole Hopf, Paige Stratton, Peter Hoffecker Mejia, Seul Yi, Shamira Wilson, Kylee Williams, Zack Hurst.
26th Annual ArtReach Exhibition
Each year, ArtReach provides high-quality year-round, community-based art education to children ages 5-18 living in underserved areas of Indianapolis. This exhibition celebrates their creative growth and achievements by professionally displaying their work in the Art Center’s galleries for their friends, family, and community to see.
Thank you to our sponsors Sun King Brewing Company and Mallow Run Winery for making this exhibition possible.
