Coping with Uncertainty: Petty Traders in Post-Soviet Russia

#var:page_name# cover

Kamil Wilecki looks at systemic transformation in Russia, addressing the passage from socialism to contemporary Russia's particular form of capitalism. Wilecki argues that it was petty trade that enabled vast numbers of people -- especially those from the underprivileged social classes -- to survive the crisis of the 1990s in Russia. Wielecki looks at this phenomenon by considering the broader cultural context, behaviors and economic patterns inherited from Soviet times, social representations of trade and work, and the role of ethnic minorities in the new system.
