Join AIA Chesapeake Bay and Historic Annapolis in a hardhat construction tour of one of the largest and most elegant of Annapolis' historic homes, and one of the most important surviving Georgian structures from colonial America. Maintained as a National Historic Landmark Property by Historic Annapolis, the massive five-part James Brice House is undergoing a multi-year, multi-million dollar restoration facilitated by a team of highly respected experts who have experience on some of the nation's most significant historic structures. Originally built in 1774 by James Brice, a gentlman planter, respected lawyer, local and county officeholder, member of Maryland's Executive Council, and acting Governor, the house provides a structural, archaeological and architectural window into colonial life in Annapolis from the late 18th century to the early 21st century, when it was purchased by the State of Maryland. Built with the skill and discerning eye of a laboring class and with the aid of a talented but enslaved work force, historians today commend James Brice for the extraordinary accounts of the work he kept during its construction.
