Square One are an award-winning Glasgow-based quartet, known for their brand of heavy-hitting melodic jazz and energised live performances. A collaboration arising from their time at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, guitarist Joe Williamson, pianist Peter Johnstone, bassist David Bowden and
drummer/percussionist Stephen Henderson have already gained deserved recognition for their work, receiving 2015's Peter Whittingham Jazz Award.
BBC Radio Scotland has described them as 'A powerhouse of Scottish jazz talent', while Radio 3's Julian Joseph remarked that Square One are 'A soulful and empathetic band with an irresistible charisma...they dominated the room from beat one'. The group’s debut album 'In Motion' confirms that such commendations are justified.
The band otherwise possesses its own, solid jazz identity infused with soul and rock; and the ensemble's intelligent empathy and balance is redolent of, say, the Moutin Reunion Quartet (albeit with guitar, whose styling, in different moments, might easily evoke Mike Walker, Louis Stewart or Mike Stern.
