Ferrocement - Low Cost Water Tanks

The current water crisis has seen a skyrocketing of the price of plastic water storage tanks. Just a few years ago it costed R1 or less per litre for such tanks, and now it costs R3 or more per litre for the same tanks. While the need for private water storage remains dire, supply and demand economics are pushing the price of tanks out of reach for many South Africans. Thankfully ferrocement tanks offer a low cost (albeit labour intensive) alternative to plastic storage tanks.

- What is ferrocement? -

Ferrocement simply means iron (ferro) and cement. Cement has incredible compression strength, but sucky tensile strength. Iron (steel) has incredible tensile strength, but costs much more than cement. Combine the two and you get the best of both worlds! With ferrocement tanks, you use a framework of steel rebar and mesh such as chicken wire, and plaster it over with cement. These tanks are incredibly strong and water tight, with the walls being as thin as 2cm thick in some cases. With a cost comparison of up to a third of a standard plastic tank, ferrocement tanks offer a cost-effective alternative for those looking to harvest rainwater in drought stricken Cape Town.

- What we'll be covering -

Come share in this collaborative workshop as we explore:

Ferrocement basics
Different design options and how to design your own tank
Tank plumbing (inlets, oulets, drains, and sumps), and
Hands-on practical installing a 1,000 litre tank

This is a participatory and practical workshop where you'll leave equipped with everything you need to design and install your own ferrocement tank.

- Workshop days -

While this workshop is only scheduled for 1 day, ferrocement tanks are multi-day builds due to the nature of cement work, and typically consists of the following:

Day 1 - concrete foundation and steel armature
Day 2 - attaching steel mesh, adding plumbing, and applying first layer of plaster
Day 3 - final sealing plaster layer

The workshop will take place on Day 2, however participants are welcome to attend Day 1 (scheduled for Wednesday 18 April) and Day 3 (scheduled for Monday 23 April) if you're available. We will however be covering Day 1 and Day 3's processes at the workshop (Day 2).

- Costs -

Cost per person is R220. Tickets available here: http://qkt.io/8or4B2

In the spirit of transparency, please see this link for a breakdown of our estimated costs: https://goo.gl/rhWjRj

This workshop will only go ahead if there are 10 confirmed paying participants, so please share with those you feel may benefit. This is to ensure we cover our costs, keep the workshop fee low and make this education accessible. In the event we do not reach the 10 humans target, your ticket will be fully refunded. Tickets are non-refundable otherwise.

This workshop will also only go ahead if we reach our crowdfunding goal of R2,500 for the materials required for the tank installation for this workshop. We decided to keep the cost of the tank materials separate from the workshop cost so that the ticket fee remains low. See this link to the crowdfunding campaign: https://goo.gl/q6Hh8x

Confirmation that this workshop will go ahead will be announced on Monday 16 April 2018.

- What to bring -
