Kool Beans coffee fans-- you are in for a real treat! We are thrilled to host Dr. Hugh Smeltekop on Saturday April 14th for 2 sessions of coffee cupping at 9 and 10 am in our fikaffee room. Cost is $5.00 and will cover coffee and some baked goods. Reservations are required, so please stop in our shop to purchase a ticket or call ahead to reserve one.
Dr. Smeltekop is a friend of Kool Beans going back a number of years when we were first able to purchase green coffee beans from Carmen Pampa in Bolivia. Hugh is the Executive Director of the Carmen Pampa Fund. He will tell the story of Carmen Pampa and give us insight into the coffee cupping experience.
Cupping is a way to evaluate the flavor profiles of different coffee through taste and smell. Cupping is a standardized practice with specialized equipment and involves a dry fragrance evaluation, set temperature water, a 4-minute extraction period, breaking the crust of the sample, skimming the sample and then tasting the coffee by “slurping” it with vigor so that it sprays into and throughout your mouth and palate. Finally, the evaluation concludes with noting your experience using a judging sheet.
There are very unique local connections to Carmen Pampa. It has been supported in many ways through individuals in Brookings, from St. Thomas More Catholic church and through SDSU. Carmen Pampa is a school and farm in the mountains of Bolivia where poverty is commonplace and education is not.
Kool Beans contributes $1.00 to the Fund for every pound of our Carmen Pampa blend we sell.
