These Shining Lives - These Shining Lives, written by Melanie Marnich, is based on the true story of the “Radium Girls”. These young women in the 1920s and '30s painted the faces of luminous watches and clocks, unknowingly becoming some of the early victims of radium poisoning. Set in Ottawa, IL, home of the Radium Dial Company, the play follows Catherine Donohue from her beginnings as a factory worker in 1922 through the litigation she pursued into the late 1930s. From aspects of labor law and women's history to the changing roles of women in the workplace and in the household, the issues raised in “These Shining Lives” clearly resonate with us today.
