Prenatal yoga is an excellent way to prepare for pregnancy and birth by helping to deal with fatigue, stress, aches and pains. Practicing yoga during pregnancy requires a constant reminder to be present in the moment, physically and mentally, each day may be different. Prenatal yoga can have both physical and mental benefits, creating community and support between pregnant women. This may continue into an organized play group after delivery for the babies and moms to keep in touch

We will review a number of modifications which are especially useful during pregnancy. Modifying poses is a way to compensate for the extra weight of the uterus, make space for the baby, and to be cautious of the softened and relaxed ligaments due to hormonal changes. Pregnancy is a joyous time, but it can be overwhelming with all the changes taking place in your body, life, and home. It’s important for the pregnant mother to make time to practice as well as to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Yoga can be done at any age. It's just a matter of picking what type of yoga you do and working within your abilities. “We lose about a half-pound of muscle per year for each year we’re not regularly engaged in resistance training,” says Jessica Matthews, assistant professor of exercise science at Miramar College in San Diego. Strength training also helps keep your bones strong.

Yoga is great for seniors because it does not require specialized equipment and can be done anywhere. “One of the most important things is taking great care to understand what your body needs,” Matthews says. If you have arthritis, limited mobility, or other health issues, she says, there is a modification for almost every yoga pose to accommodate your physical needs. Yoga is a great way to gently build your endurance while also fostering a mind-body connection.
