An Evening with David Graham Phillips: Madison’s Own Subversive Journalist and Muckraker with Bennet Ayers at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site. Phillips was born in Madison in 1867, educated at Princeton University and became an investigative journalist in New York 1906. He exposed corruption in the U.S. Senate which helped lead to the passage of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution which provided that U.S. senators be elected by popular vote instead of by state legislatures. He was tragically shot and killed in 1911 by a paranoid man who believed a negative character in one of Phillips’ novels was based the man’s sister. The man, Fitzhugh Coyle Goldsborough, then shot himself. Admission is $5 per person. Please call 812.273.0556 for more information
