Join the Latin American Studies Center for a film screening and discussion of Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s Best Picture Oscar win. In recognition of Pride Month 2018’s theme of BETWEEN/BEYOND, we explore the film’s depiction of love between humans and non-humans, and celebrate the queer possibilities beyond normative understandings of intimacy and resistance.
“The Shape of Water: a movie in which a mute woman, a gay man, a black woman, a conscientious foreigner, and a creature from the green Latin American lagoon formed a coalition against white heteropatriarchial nationalist militarism and its brutal lack of imagination and compassion. A movie in which there is abundant love for color, for water, for tap dancing, for camraderie, for oddballs and misfits, for looking, for surprises, for fantasy.”
