Join the Sexuality and Space Specialty Group (SXSSG) of the American Association of Geographers (AAG) for their pre-conference on Monday, April 9, 2018, in New Orleans, Louisiana at the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans.

This year's theme is "Making Queer Community in Times of Crisis and Resistance." Emerging from the cultural turn in geography, the field of geographies of sexualities, well over twenty years old, has matured, taking on a host of themes such as queering spaces of migration, social reproduction, lesbian and transgender performativity within public and private spaces, geographic methods, transgender experiences with carceral spaces, biopolitics, and post-colonial cities.

To begin forging new agendas for our scholarship and activism, and inspired by the New Orleans setting, SXSSG is organizing a one-day pre-conference in partnership with local queer and trans community groups. We envision a festive and collegial space for sharing ideas, making community, and strategizing for justice and equity within and beyond the discipline of Geography.

We hope to further discussions around the materiality of community and place-making at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, disability and citizenship status in the face of overlapping discourses and practices of hope, despair, and resistance. We wish to highlight questions of urban planetarity, critical urbanisms, precarity, queer ecologies and the connections between queer politics and movements for climate justice.

The pre-conference is FREE to attend and all are welcome.
