This is the "Come to Linden" event! It is an annual WWII re-enactment. Our town is taken over by the Germans, and there are two battles during the day, fighting in period correct uniforms with period correct weapons. There are also MANY other things throughout the day, such as WWII survivors and holocaust survivors talking about their experiences. Period music, period dancing and folks dressed in period clothing. This event has won many awards including Event of the Year in the State of TN.
The theme for this year is the Coast Guard, who played an under-recognized role in the war. During WWII, the Coast Guard served as a coastal defense, guarding against attacks from German U-boats and other such threats, and also played a direct combat support role with the Navy, piloting ship-to-shore landing craft of all kinds while under fire. Coast Guard strength peaked at 171,749 service members during the war, and 1,917 "coasties" gave their lives in the service of their nation.
