Derek Brown is an independent jazz musician with local ties to South Haven. This concert is a free event completing a two-day program that includes workshops with both the high school and middle school bands and a day long masterclass with the Jazz Ensemble. The program is made possible by sponsorship from Foundry Hall and Woodham's Ford Lincoln. Donations collected at the event will go to the South Haven Instrumental Boosters Club.
Derek Brown is a professional, touring musician and recording artist. He received his BM in Music Performance (Classical and Jazz) from Hope College in 2006 and his MM in Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music in 2008. Derek’s teaching experience includes being the director of jazz studies at Abilene Christian University for six years.
Derek now lives and performs in Chicago, playing in various bands and projects around the area and throughout the world. His ground-breaking style of playing, as exemplified on his “BEATBoX SAX” music videos and tutorials on YouTube, are very popular among saxophonists and music lovers alike. HIs innovative playing style and original music have garnered to endorsements with Legere, JodyJazz, P.Mauriat, BG, and AKG. Derek has toured extensively as a solo performer throughout China, Russia, Japan, Germany, France, Poland, UK, Norway, Finland, Malaysia, Latvia, Serbia, Israel, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Brazil, Dubai, as well as throughout the U.S.
