From the introduction of the first bike in the United States in 1819 to the recent trend of bike sharing, the bicycle has been influential in shaping American culture. This lecture will discuss how bicycles changed American definitions of femininity, made car culture and aviation possible, were a marker of childhood in America after World War II, became a tool for fitness, and why the mountain bike came to dominate modern bike culture.
