“A Liverpudlian West Side Story : twin brothers are separated at birth because their mother cannot afford to keep both. She gives one of them away to wealthy Mrs Lyons and they grow up as friends in ignorance of their fraternity until the inevitable quarrel unleashes a blood-bath.

Willy Russell was first commissioned to write a 70-minute piece for Merseyside Young People's Theatre Company, a small touring company who visited schools in the area, with a company of five actors and only minimal props. The musical followed in 1983 and was revived in the west end in 1988. That production still tours today, with a new tour in 2018 staring Lyn Paul
