Magdalene Community Centre has offered archery as part of its programme since the early 90’s. As members of staff who were qualified to instruct moved on, the ability to offer archery was lost. In 2010 Greg, Stuart & Rab went along to the Archery World Cup which was being held in Princess Street Gardens. Stuart was immediately hooked on this (in his eyes) new sport, however was completely shocked when he was informed that there is nowhere in Edinburgh he would be able to take up Archery unless he was a member of one of the Universities. Stuart & Rab took this information to the Community Centre’s Management Committee and requested their support in addressing this void. The Management Committee agreed it would greatly benefit the members of the local community if the Centre could offer Archery to the public. Working together with The City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Archery Association a plan was created; Magdalene community Centre would become a feeder for an Archery Club Based at Meadow bank Sports Centre. Unfortunately this did not come to pass. Undeterred the Centre pushed on and ran an Archery Leadership Award Course; twelve People took part and successfully passed the Course, allowing the Centre to offer Archery once more. With the help of the local Primary School and funding from the National Lottery’s 2014 Communities award. A beginner’s course was created, this course was successfully delivered and the participants now form our Archery Club. Our Club is not geared for competitive shooting (i.e. open tournaments). The basis of our club is to offer people the chance to enjoy the sport in a friendly environment.
