Magnet Theatre in partnership with UCT, Stellenbosch University and experts in child psychiatry is doing a research project looking at the impact of theatre on the connection between carers and their babies. The aim of the research is to see whether the parent, in this case, the father, will enjoy the show together with his baby and whether this enjoyment can be seen to have an impact on the parent-infant interaction. Thanks to funding from the Red Cross Children’s hospital and the Harry Crossley Bursary Fund we are able to film one performance of our play SCOOP with an audience of fathers and babies in order to conduct this research.

SCOOP directed by Koleka Putuma and Jennie Reznek is a play that was developed by Magnet Theatre specifically for carers and babes from 6 weeks to 12 months old. It is performed in an intimate, playful and enjoyable safe space of a custom designed tent. Four performers specially trained in engaging the very young work with song, sounds and gentle movement connect with six to eight caregivers and babies at a time.

We are looking for 12 fathers with babies between the ages of 6 weeks to 12 months who will be prepared to take part in our research project. The fathers and babies will be randomly divided into two groups, Group A and Group B, at the first meeting on the 6th of April.

GROUP A : 6 fathers and their babies will watch the show on the 7th of April
GROUP B: 6 fathers and their babies who will watch the show on the 14th of April.

1. Group A : The fathers in this group would need to be happy to be interviewed in a Play Session the day before the performance as well as be filmed with their babies as part of the performance of SCOOP. There will also be a follow up Focus Group and Play Session a week after the performance.
