The Wizard of Otāhuhu is an outrageous twist on the children’s story The Wizard of Oz, performed with South Auckland flavour.
Dorothy and her little dog Koko are caught up in Cyclone Tita and are whisked away to Munchkinland more commonly known as Rainbows End. Desperate to get home to Māngere, Dorothy discovers their only way back is to ask for help from the Wizard in Otāhuhu. The journey to the Wizard is long and perilous with witches and crows around every corner waiting to attack. Along the way Dorothy makes friends with a Scarecrow who has no brain, a Tin Man who has no heart and a Lion who has no courage. They decide to join Dorothy on her quest to Otāhuhu, meanwhile, the witches will stop at nothing to prevent them from reaching their destination.
The Wizard of Otāhuhu is a must-see theatre production for this April school holidays and another clever fairy-tale makeover from Māngere Arts Centre – Ngā Tohu o Uenuku following their previous successes, including last year’s award winning Mirror Mirror.
A 40-strong cast has perfected their script, songs and dance steps. From rap to gospel, hip hop to high kicks and wrestling moves, The Wizard of Otāhuhu is full of energy and humour that will have you laughing and wanting to get up and dance. This is a show for the whole family and a true South Auckland community collaboration. Don't miss out, book now!
