Black British Shorts: curated screening + performance
sorryyoufeeluncomfortable present a screening of Black British shorts by emerging artists. To what extent can the work of Black filmmakers contribute to the wider movement for freedom? Is representation enough? How can visual media contribute to contemporary narratives of emancipation?
The screening will include a performance lecture choreographed by Halima Haruna + Imani Robinson.
Join SYFU members Rabz Lansiquot + Imani Robinson for a post show Q&A to discuss moving beyond representation, towards liberation in Black film + performance.
The first iteration of Black British Shorts was commissioned by Carey Robinson at the ICA as part of the 2017 Black Film British Cinema Conference in collaboration with Goldsmiths College.
As part of the Glasgow International 2018 Supported Programme, Many Studios has invited London-based collective sorryyoufeeluncomfortable to take residence at The Gallow Gate from 18 April - 20 May.
sorryyoufeeluncomfortable collective creates spaces for radical study, conversation and multi-disciplinary art-making.
(BUT) WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT WHITE SUPREMACY? includes work from 6 Black artists, writers and makers: Christopher Kirubi, Halima Haruna, Rabz Lansiquot, Mayfly Mutyambizi, Imani Robinson & Jacob V Joyce. Artists will respond in lose or direct ways to the title question, for example, they may invert the question in order to ask: “What is white supremacy doing to you?”, or they may suggest that as Black artists, to make work of any subject matter, or of none at all, is to resist, to survive and to “do something”. The title (BUT) WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT WHITE SUPREMACY? acts both as a refusal (you come here expecting me to tell you what to do, but I only show you my art and make you see what you already know) and an acknowledgement that we are forced to share our lives with white supremacy. The question looms and it persists... the question is tiresome... the question is discomforting.
(BUT) WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT WHITE SUPREMACY? is curated by Imani Robinson and Rabz Lansiquot. The project is funded by Glasgow International and Many Studios.
The static exhibition is supported by a programme of conversations, workshops and performances, of which Black British Shorts is one.
