The band formed when vocalist Mel Peterson, a South Carolina native transplanted to Ellensburg, met local keyboardist Ben Macy at a jazz jam. Connecting over their shared love of Soul, Motown, and Jazz music, Ben and Mel got a few of their friends together and started playing wineries and parties all over the valley, much to the delight of music lovers everywhere.
Melany Peterson grew up listening to Roberta Flack, Dionne Warrick, Jerry Butler, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin and many other Gospel, Jazz and R & B artists who shaped her musical style. Now, she is one part of the Cooke Canyon Duo which performs a fusion of contemporary-pop, jazz standards and rhythm and blues classics. Melany’s interest in singing took flight at the age of 12 singing in her hometown church in Charleston, SC. There she would often be caught alone playing the piano and singing some of her favorite tunes by Roberta Flack. Melany often reflects back to her favorite artist, Roberta Flack to whom she owes a lot of her sultry vocals and singing style. Yet, remaining true to her own vocal styling, she coins herself as the “Song Bird of the South”.
