Red & Ruby
Sunday, May 6
McMenamins Edgefield @ The Winery Tasting Room
7 p.m. til 9 p.m. | Free | 21 and over
Swing and jazz duo Red and Ruby - Vince Brown (Hot Club Sandwich, Red Brown & The Tune Stranglers) on guitar and banjo and vocalist LaVon Hardison - perform original arrangements of songs dating from the present back to the 1920's. They tackle both familiar standards like "Honesuckle Rose" and "I Love Paris" as well as more obscure musical gems dug out from the very roots of jazz, all interpreted with humor and a dollop of historical context. The pair's balance of gravity and levity, along with skill and humility, has earned it an increasingly devoted following in the Northwest. Brown has been performing and teaching acoustic guitar, banjo and music theory for over 30 years. He has played venues and festivals around the world. Recent performance projects include western swing style guitar with Red Brown & The Tune Stranglers; guitar & tenor banjo with the gypsy swing band Hot Club Sandwich; and regular performances on guitar and 5-string banjo. Hardison's background includes musical theater, various roles with Boston Lyric Opera, and work with a variety of regional musicians. She has contributed vocals to albums by Hot Club Sandwich and Obrador, and recently (after much urging by fans) released her first solo album, Choices. She?s also a voiceover artist, vocal coach, and church choir director. The humor and angst of the human condition are painted with unerring clarity in the music of Red & Ruby -- and they share the fun with anyone willing to come along for the ride.
