"Reimagine Everything" began as an open and practical acknowledgement of our deep need to be together at a tumultuous time, and a conduit for creative ways to resist. We resist by believing that we, as artists and as a sentient species, need to create on a scale that society clearly does have the capacity to destroy. In the course of 2017, due to the energy and commitment of all of the people who participated, "Reimagine Everything" has moved from being an action to a collective practice. We will continue to offer a safe and creative space every Thursday evening at Metabolic Studio in 2018 with important recalibrations as we move away from a Metabolic Studio action of public engagement and towards a metabolic practice that's direction is structurally determined by the people who come every week. The 2018 phase is renamed, and will become "What Next-declaring the broad and open intention I have for this very special community, and the hive mind that all the participants created this year. My aspiration for "What Next" is that it strategically supports and catalyzes our forthright articulation of what we demand of our citizenship and our future. I am truly grateful to the exceptional artists and collaborators who are at the helm of our weekly print studio sessions.
Metabolic Studio has also opened a Reimagine space adjacent to the "Salon de Fleurus" on Main Street in Lone Pine, and will start the year with a workshop-format engagement that I have named "Reimagine Payahuunadu". By placing the Paiute term for, "there will always be water" at the center, I state my hopes and honor the native custodians of the Owens Valley dry lakebed for millennia-the might of their fight against social injustice and their protection of water for us all. I invite those who will come together in this collective action to reimagine and creatively declare their support of the living systems within Payahuunadu.
