ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Barbara Parrish Alcott has lived in Hampton, VA since age 3, grew up in Buckroe, and says she's always been "beachy" (pun intended), graduated from business college, married her high school sweetheart, Gerald Alcott, worked at Ft. Monroe, had two children (a son who is deceased, and a daughter who lives out of state). She has participated in various types of activities throughout her life, including a long stint in community volunteerism and activism that led to several State awards and honors. She served as a two-term President of the Hampton Junior Women's Club, as well as holding several executive offices on the Tidewater District level. She was instrumental in getting public kindergarten started in Hampton and also in establishing the Hampton Arts Center, originally located in Phoebus.
Always interested in metaphysics and the deeper questions of life, a "mid-life crisis" pushed her to return to school via taking distribution credit classes at Thomas Nelson Community College. Her strong academic performance ("fear was a great motivator") led to a scholarship to Old Dominion University from the Alumni Society, where she completed the Honors Program in Psychology, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. Degree. She went on to Norfolk State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 60-hour Master of Social Work Degree in both Clinical and Policy Tracks.
She has taken numerous courses in women's studies, group work, and metaphysics. She was one of the original instructors in the experiential New Horizons Course for Women, at TNCC. She is a certified Second Degree Reiki practitioner.
Barbara is retired from Hampton City Schools where she was employed as a School Social Worker, serving in various capacities completing psychosocial assessments and working with families, crisis situations, and students with disabilities.
She says her continuing quest for spiritual answers led her to the Metaphysical Chapel of Life several years ago. She is an active member, noting that she's "still on the journey for answers" while "feeling like she has come home."
