Middletown Arts Center is proud to host the 7th Annual Exhibition of Scratchboard Art. The International Society of Scratchboard Artists working in the medium of scratchboard will exhibit exceptional works of art this MAY 4TH –MAY 31ST at the MAC. The opening reception is Friday, May 4th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The reception is open to the public. Both are free to attend.
Participating artists represent 21 states and six other countries including Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Iran, and Switzerland. Many of these artists, including those from the highest Master level, will be attending the opening reception, a juried show where awards will be given to the best work.
Each artwork is created by meticulously engraving into a board coated in white clay and then covered with black india ink. Line by line, the ink is removed with a sharp tool creating contrasting values and a high level of detail as the clay becomes exposed. This process has roots going back to the 1800's and is now making a comeback in graphic design and fine art.
Scratchboard artists will be conducting demonstrations throughout the opening weekend of May 5th and 6th. Pre-registration is required to attend the day long demonstrations, which will provide an opportunity for students to practice various techniques. See website for demonstration schedule and registration fees at https://www.middletownartscenter.com/events-exhibits. During that weekend, the MAC will be open both Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. so the public may view the scratchboard exhibit. The exhibit will continue through May 31st during Middletown Arts Center’s regular building hours.
