Learn about book arts and print making during this two-day workshop organized by Mingei in partnership with the Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights.
Volume One: Book Arts
Saturday, May 12, 9:30-12:30 at Mingei
The fun starts at Mingei with a tour of VOLUMINOUS ART – Treasures from San Diego’s University Libraries. Sibyl Rubottom, Manager of the Print Studio at the Athenaeum Art Center and featured artist in VOLUMINOUS ART, will then give participants an introduction to book arts emphasizing the role of text, structure and image. They will also learn to create three simple books: eight-page, stab binding and accordion. One of these books will be used in the Volume Two class, where text and images will be incorporated.
Volume Two: Printmaking
Saturday, May 19, 9:30-12:30 at the Athenaeum Art Center Print Studio
On day two of the workshop, participants will tour the Rotunda Press in the Bread & Salt building. They will use a variety of printing presses to bring their books to life, including a 1960s Asbern letterpress, an antique Seggie letterpress from 1850 and a small Vandercook proofing press.
