This training will cover the biopsychosocial aspects about substance use, Opioid Use Disorder and addiction and how to assess and intervene. The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addiction, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions will help participants understand how levels of addiction treatment are determined; information to consider as prescribers who are determining opioid prescriptions, and the resources of treatment.
Dr. Nicole Gastala, MD is a board certified family physician in Marshalltown, Iowa. Dr. Gastala graduated from the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, Chicago, in 2012. She is affiliated with Primary Health Care, Inc., a federally qualified health center, which provides a full spectrum family medicine outpatient care. Her special interested include group based patient care, quality improvement research, obesity and preventative medicine, medication assisted treatment and chromic pain management. She has continued to participate since January 2016 in the Center for Integrated Health Solutions Project ECHO Buprenorphine sponsored by HRSA/SAMHSA. She developed the Medication Assisted Treatment program in Marshalltown as part of a HRSA Substance Abuse Expansion grant. She has extensive history of research experience and was honored in 2014 with the Resident Research Award and in 2008 with the Global Health Presentation Award.
