Ms. Patti Schildkamp will discuss some of the local area butterflies such as the Monarch, Painted Lady, Great Spangled Fritillary, Red Spotted Purple, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail, Giant Swallowtail, Buckeye, and Eastern Tailed Blue. She will review the host plants that feed the caterpillars and the plants that supply nectar to the butterflies. Ms. Schildkamp will show photos of the butterflies, their lifecycle stages, and their favorite plants, and will provide several fact sheets for both butterflies and plants. The Monarch butterfly will be spotlighted with regard to what is needed to raise butterflies from eggs to emerging adults, their migration patterns, butterfly tagging, and registering a garden as a Monarch Waystation. She will identify books and links to butterfly-related information. This program is cosponsored by Garden Club of Monroeville.

Patti Schildkamp became a Penn State Master Gardener in Spring 2016 and is continuously learning about plants and insects, especially native plants that attract pollinators and the importance of beneficial insects. She has studied the habits and habitats of local area butterflies and has raised Monarch butterflies. Her garden is a registered Monarch Waystation that was expanded last summer to include the milkweed for Monarch caterpillars, as well as the native and non-native perennial and annuals that provide butterfly nectar. Through the Master Gardener Program, she has made presentations to senior citizens and school-age children on worm composting, herbs, and vegetable container gardening. Ms. Schildkamp resides in Greensburg, PA and is retired as supervisor of Excela Health's Blood Bank System.
