An HIV self-test may soon be under regulatory approval with Health Canada. Self-testing has the potential not only to increase HIV testing uptake among individuals who face provider-level and system-level barriers to conventional HIV testing services, but also to provide opportunities for people to monitor their status outside of a clinical setting. The growing evidence on the performance of HIV self-testing and the risks and benefits calls for further exploration of how HIV self-testing can be used in Canada to reach the UNAIDS target of diagnosing 90% of all people living with HIV.

Many questions remain about HIV self-testing before it can be rolled out in Canada. How will the tests be accessed? How will we ensure linkage to care and prevention services? For which communities is HIV self-testing appropriate? How will we integrate self-testing into surveillance programs?

In this webinar, Dr. Nitika Pant Pai will discuss the global movement towards self-testing and her own experience piloting a self-test in Montreal. Dr. John Kim will discuss efforts to seek Health Canada approval of the HIV self-test, and Susanne Nicolay will give her perspective of how the self-test can be applied in the Canadian context.

Speakers:

• Geneviève Boily-Larouche, National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases, Winnipeg, MB
• Nitika Pant Pai, McGill University, Montreal, QC
• John Kim, Public Health Agency of Canada, Winnipeg, MB
• Susanne Nicolay, Wellness Wheel, Regina, SK
