Matt Welter has been studying fungus across Wisconsin for 25 years. He will be hosting a 2 hour nature hike from the Navarino Nature Center and back. Matt will help identify mushrooms and impart knowledge from edibility to insipidness, from humorous ways of remembering mushroom names to identifying totally forgettable fungus, from finding wonder in a fungus smaller than your pinkie fingernail to realizing you are standing on a mushroom larger than your driveway.
Participants are encouraged to bring cameras, notepads and pencils, as well as bug spray and long pants. The hike goes rain or shine, though not tornado or thunderstorm. Hiking is slow (about .8 miles an hour) due to the number of finds right near the trail. Some off trail hiking required. There is no guarantee that edible mushrooms will be found, but then again, as Matt always says, "You don't have to eat them to enjoy them." If edibles are found, Matt will prepare and offer samples.
