Compassion fatigue is an occupational hazard that often leads to lack of job satisfaction, job productivity, and negative outcomes for both workers and agencies. Behavioral Health Professionals are at increased risk for compassion fatigue and yet the impact of exposures is often not recognized. In this session, participants will gain understanding of the symptoms and impacts of compassion fatigue. Further participants will learn critical skills in prevention and self-care. The role and opportunities for agencies to prevent and respond will also be explored. As a result of this training, participant will be able to:
Distinguish between burn-out and compassion fatigue;
Recognize personal and agency factors that place them at greater risk for compassion fatigue;
Understand the impact on job performance and personal satisfaction;
Practice opportunities to interrupt a stress response;
Identify self-care opportunities; and
Learn opportunities to safe-guard from the negative impact of compassion fatigue through changes in agency culture, systematic supports and supportive supervision.
PRESENTER: Dr. Tana Bridge is a Licensed Masters Social Worker in both clinical and macro practice. Currently she is a professor at Eastern Michigan University. She develops curriculum and teaches classes in theory, ethics, practice, loss, grief, and trauma. She received her Master’s degree from the University of Michigan and her doctorate from Wayne State University. She is certified as a Supervisor Consultant in trauma from The National Institute for Trauma and Loss and has received the Trauma and Loss Consultant of the Year. In addition to teaching, she is active in grant work and in ethics and trauma-specific agency-based consulting and training.
