Houses on the Land
Plattekill’s Rural Treasures
Houses, Hamlets, Crossings and Byways
This year’s tour explores the fascinating history, families, agriculture, and cultural heritage of the town of Plattekill winding through the richly varied countryside via its many crossings and its hamlets - New Hurley, Modena, Ardonia, Clintondale and Plattekill, a rarely explored and little-known land-locked region between Gardiner, Shawangunk, Marlboro and Lloyd.
The day begins with registration and a tour of the beautiful interior of New Hurley Reformed Church. Featured are a selection of the town’s most interesting and unusual vernacular treasures in a range of period styles, dating from the 19th to the 20th century. An important theme is the Greek Revival aesthetic and its diverse vernacular expressions in the region. An informal reception and tasting of local wines at an artist’s private studio/home in a stunning landscape setting ends the day. A great adventure awaits us - most houses have never before been open to the public.
