This film is a part of our For the Record series.

A conversation with Dr. Kenneth Campbell and Claudia Smith Brinson about representations of race in the media accompanies the program.

In 1992 the acquittal of white LAPD officers for the brutal beating of motorist Rodney King despite video evidence spurred six days of protests and public violence. Drawing on decades of archival footage, LA 92 examines how the “Rodney King trial,” subsequent unrest, and their representation in media continue to frame conversations about race in America.

Kenneth Campbell is a Head Associate Professor of Mass Communication at USC specializing in the first amendment and the representation of African Americans in the media.

Claudia Smith Brinson has over 30 years of experience in journalism as a columnist, senior writer, and associate editor. She is currently working on a book on the missing voices of the S.C. civil rights movement.
