Our first seminar of the series will be hosted by Leonard (Len) Bell. Len teaches Art History at the University of Auckland. He will be speaking about his latest book Strangers Arrive: Emigrés and the Arts in New Zealand, 1930–1980. This book tells the story of migrants forced from Europe from the 1930s to the 1950s, including a group of artists and writers, photographers and architects whose European modernism radically reshaped the arts in this country. Len discusses key questions including how migrants were received by New Zealanders, how displacement and settlement in New Zealand transformed their work, and how the arrival of European modernists intersected with the burgeoning nationalist movement in the arts in New Zealand.
