Dr. Angela Stroud leads our own community conversation on guns on Sunday, April 8, at 10:00 a.m. in the usual worship space in the Ponzio Center, Northland College. The news of mass shootings, including the shocking school shootings at Parkland, Florida, have poignantly raised the question of gun violence in America anew. We seem to be paralyzed, unable to agree as a society on meaningful action to reduce the extraordinary level of gun violence in our country. But, somehow this moment feels different from our past. Motivated by our nation’s youth, there’s a new momentum to get real, to get honest, about guns and violence in America. Will this moment also pass? Will we have the patience and the wisdom to address the previously intractable problems of our history, our constitution and our gun culture? People of good will overwhelmingly want to do something – but what and how? Religious groups typically remain silent, because the topic is controversial. But, Unitarians don’t avoid controversy when ethical imperatives are at stake.

Join Dr. Angela Stroud for a community conversation on guns at our April 8th “Other Sunday” as we explore this critical topic. Dr. Stroud, assistant professor Sociology and Social Justice at Northland College, published her acclaimed book, “Good Guys With Guns” in 2016, a major contribution to understanding gun culture in America. Dr. Stroud continues to explore the roots causes of violence, and we are fortunate to have her lead our own conversation.

“The Other Sunday” is a once-a-month informal gathering of our congregation and friends dedicated to exploring a variety of topics important to our values principles. The gathering includes a featured talk on the topic, time for engagement with questions and conversation. Like our regular worship services, “The Other Sunday” is open and welcoming to all – members, friends and community members are all invited. (Note: we do not provide Religious Education time or childcare on “The Other Sunday”).

This event will take place on the second floor of the Ponzio Campus Center.
