Yui Kiyohara’s feature debut was also her thesis film at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where she studied under Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Our House is a shape-shifting film, thick with atmosphere, false starts, surreal touches, and beautifully drawn scenes exploring the inner lives of four women (split into two pairs—accidental roommates and a mother/daughter) who share the same house at the same time, but don’t know it. Featuring some of this year’s most elegant cinematography and committed performances from its four leads, Our House establishes Kiyohara as one of the brightest lights of the new Japanese cinema. “Whereas Lynch or Kurosawa might have doubled down on the nightmarish implications of an imploding multiverse, Kiyohara more restrainedly traces a bridge between two realities that reverberates with the ghostly echoes of what could have been, what might be, and what will or won’t be in an obscure future. Did anyone else hear a noise just now?”—Dan Sullivan, Film Comment
