On Saturday April 14th, the Doug Wood 5K Run (Featured in Newsday as one of 5 “Must Run” Events) will take place starting at 9 am from Norwood Avenue Elementary school in Northport , NY. The XC Trail Running race is in memory of Dr. Douglas Wood, a local psychiatrist, sportsman, and friend.

The trail run is a unique run through Northport’s Makamah Preserve located near Cedar Meadow beach " It's challenging, but it's so much fun ," says Northport's Kathryn Martin, a national age-group champion who's run the race several times." You're just running through the woods" The course has mile markers and digital clocks at each mile and a hay jump just before the finish.The start and finish takes place at the Elementary school off of Norwood Avenue in Northport. Race timing will be done by Start to Finish Corp featuring My Laps disposable timing chips and an overhead digital clock at the finish line. In addition a video of all finishers and photos will be provided at start2finish.com.

In addition a kid's fun run is held at 8:30 am on the field adjacent to the school. All kid finishers get a medal.

Proceeds support the Doug Wood Scholarship Fund, which awards 2 academic scholarships annually in Doug Wood’s name to members of the Northport High School XC/track and field programs, the Northport Food Pantry and numerous other local charities.

Entrant gets a shot at one of the most unusual raffle prizes anywhere; Flight lessons in an airplane!!

The funds raised from this event will go to the Doug Wood Scholarship Fund. This annual award will be presented to a graduating male and female Northport High School athlete (chosen by the NHS director of athletics) to financially aide in their college goals.

Quality t-shirts to all pre-registered runners. Late and day of race applicants will receive t-shirts while supplies last.

Registration is going on online at Runsignup.com. Just click the link below to sign up today. Bib pick up takes place 'Friday night at the Super Runners shop in Huntington on New York Avenue and on race day from 7;30 - 8:45 am. at the Norwood Avenue Elementary school.

Awards: Top 3 Male & Female Finishers, Top 3 Male & Female Masters Finishers, Males & Females in 5 Year Age Groups including 1-12. First Male & Female receive commemorative artwork.

Post Race Activities: Include a generous raffle and refreshments.

Directions: Take Sagtikos/Sunken Meadow Parkway North to last exit before the Sunken Meadow Park entrance. Head west on Route 25A for approximately 3 miles. Make a right just passed the strip mall (on the right) onto Norwood Road. This road immediately goes up a steep hill, and about a half mile on the right will be the Norwood Road School.
