We are very excited to offer a children's music workshop and concert with Kristin Andreassen of The Bright Siders, presenting music that helps kids and families have meaningful conversations about emotions. Created by award-winning songwriter Kristin Andreassen and Brooklyn child psychiatrist Dr. Kari Groff. This event will begin with the workshop for kids at 4PM, then a potluck at 5, and the concert (featuring some numbers by the children) at 6:00. The concert is open to everyone. Kristin has a wide range of music to suite all!
The Bright Siders project focuses on songs about emotions (being afraid of the dark, moving to a new town, divorce, bullying) for children and their families. For this fun and interactive workshop, Kristin and her accompanist Lauren Balthrop will use these songs as a starting point to incorporate games, dancing / hand clapping, group discussion (“how do YOU feel when these things happen? And what do YOU do about it?”), and sing-alongs. The class will culminate in teaching a song to the group (complete with harmonies / parts, shakers, and other basic rhythm instruments* and instruction on how these work) that they will have the opportunity to perform for their friends and families at the evening concert.
Children with other basic instruments (guitar, ukulele, banjo) are encouraged to bring them along, and depending on the general level of the class, Kristin and Lauren can help them learn to follow along as well.
Parents who home-school their children are encouraged to attend!
