"Spero Plays Nyro, an Afternoon of the Music of Laura Nyro". By Christine & Elliot Spero -Saxophones & Percussion

2018 is an important year for fans of the music of Laura Nyro, one of the 20th century's greatest songwriters. March 3, 2018 marks the Fiftieth Anniversary of the release of Laura Nyro's album Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. It was considered one of the two most important albums that year, the other being the Beatles White Album.

The Christine Spero Group will be bringing Spero Plays Nyro, ("And When I Die", "Eli's Coming", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Sweet Blindness") to the Ocean City Public Library.

This is timeless music that touches our soul and many times we begin our love affair with these songs through the artists that bring us their fantastic renditions. For example we all remember the impressive delivery of Blood, Sweat, and Tears on “And When I Die”. Another that you are sure to remember is “Eli’s Comin’” as performed by Three Dog Night. But if we look deeper we learn that both of these super groups plus another, The Fifth Dimension, and most certainly the fabulous Barbra Streisand were all bringing us the music of a songwriter named Laura Nyro. Sadly, Laura lost her battle with ovarian cancer some years back. However, today Laura is far from being forgotten as the multi-talented group, The Christine Spero Group, performs their live tribute that pays incredible homage to Ms. Nyro. So much so that Steve Katz (Blood, Sweat, & Tears) shared the following, “I knew that Christine was doing a tribute to my old friend Laura Nyro, but I wasn’t prepared for just how amazing Christine’s performance turned out to be”.

THE CHRISTINE SPERO GROUP "Spero Plays Nyro"

In this heartfelt and moving tribute to Laura Nyro, one of the greatest and most covered songwriters of the 20th century, pianist, singer Christine Spero and her group take the listener on an unforgettable journey through some of Laura’s most memorable songs. Spero Plays Nyro reminds us that Laura’s music is poignant and timeless. The arrangements are hip, the vocals are beautiful, the musicianship is stellar. The exquisite arrangements are true to Laura’s originals but with many sweet creative touches, beautifully interpreted in the group’s own distinct style.

Christine has fully recaptured Laura’s spirit and passion with beautiful renditions running the breadth and depth of Laura's emotions. Drummer Peter O'Brien and bassist Scott Petito create a rhythm section that keeps the music driving and steady but never imposing. Saxophonist / percussionist, Elliot Spero, adds excellent sax solos, flutes and multiple percussion accents.

Excellent work and obviously a labor of love...Felix Cavaliere
