Our next big event at Oil Club is with 3 female bass music dons, and with a big support cast too this might just be the biggest female bass music lineup in China history!

Madam X (Kaizen Records Boss Lady)

DJ, label head and club impresario Madam X has proved she has many strings to her bow. A constant and moreover, crucial, fixture in Manchester’s underground clubbing scene, her intimate knowledge of the city – both as a scene and a place brimming with talented artists – quickly began to prove dividends after first breaking through in 2011.

From co-founding label and Manchester club night BPM, short for ‘Big People Music’, in 2011 to showcase how much the city had to offer, she soon built a reputation for her surefire, upfront DJ Mixes combining everything current and bubbling; grime, techno, bass, garage – you name it, Madam X would mix it. It was this reputation that paved the way for a series of BBC 1Xtra residency slots while still in Manchester – covering for Diplo on BBC Radio 1 and hosting a series of shows, it’s a combination of hard work and crucially, patience, that have really started to pay off over the last two years.

A regular fixture on festival line-ups – playing the BBC R1 Dance Tent to over 8000 people at Reading Festival this summer – and some of the underground’s most iconic nights in Deviation, Manchester’s Warehouse Project and legendary Grime night Eskimo Dance, Madam Xhas proven herself as one of the UK’s leading influential DJs. Equally adept at playing to huge crowds as she is 100-cap basements, as well as hosting her own shows on BBC Radio 1, Rinse FM and NTS, her multi-faceted approach to music feels unique and ultimately, special.

The proud head of her own label, Kaizen, too – an imprint she launched with extensive, free compilation ‘Kaizen Movements Vol.1’ in the summer of 2014 – Madam X is already overseeing the label’s debut release proper, as well as hosting Kaizen label parties across the UK. With support from Loefah and Swamp81 already, her work with Kaizen has ultimately fed into her work as a DJ too, ensuring she has kept her ear firmly to the ground, while arming her with the hands-on experience of releasing records independently.

Looking ahead, Madam X’s accomplishments to date admittedly feel like only the tip of the iceberg. Although often understated and keen to let the music do most of her talking, she continues to build on past successes – for every gig she plays, the next one is guaranteed to be bigger, better – and is clearly set on leaving her mark on UK dance music. In a big way.

SIESTA (China's Queen of Drum & Bass)

Dubbed the “Queen of Drum’n’Bass” in China; Siesta’s passion for collecting records dated back in 1999, when she started out as the only promoter putting on a series of world-class drum’n’bass parties in HK.

The rise of drum'n'bass in Shanghai is evident, and her collective "PHREAKTION" plays a crucial part of making it happen. “PHREAKTION” was set up in the summer of 1999 in Hong Kong, and Siesta brought it with her to Shanghai in late 2005 and since then, she has played host to almost all of the biggest drum'n'bass icons to China, namely Andy C, Roni Size, Goldie, Fabio, Marky, Pendulum, Scratch Perverts, LTJ Bukem, London Elektricity, just to name a few. In just 5 years, Siesta has successfully put Shanghai on the international drum’n’bass map, hosting more than 60 world-class drum’n’bass nights, as well as earning herself the reputation of being one of the best DJs in China.

2008 sees Siesta reach yet another pinnacle moment in her DJ career when she was invited to attend the Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona, making her the first person to represent China. She made her release “Long Night” with DJ Zinc, and invited long time friend and dnb MC icon Stamina to perform on the track. She has played everywhere in the world including Seoul, London, Brighton, Barcelona, Madrid, Tokyo and Bangkok in the last two years and continues to be the ultimate drum’n’bass ambassador for China and female DJs.

In 2009 she started a new Phreaktion offshoot called “WONKY KONG”, aiming to promote the new sound called “bassline”. Like dnb and dubstep, Siesta was always the first to bring out internationally acclaimed artist who are on the forefront of the music scene including Kode 9, Drop The Lime, DJ Zinc (crack house), and Jack Beats.

Aside from being one of the top promoters in China, she is best known for her funky, eclectic, dancefloor set. She has developed a veracious crowd-reading skill over years of observing the best djs in the business and also, with her very own unique rendition. She has shared stages with the biggest stars in the world and still able to hold her own - and without a doubt is an iconic sub culture figure in China.

MAS1A (SE Asia's Queen of Hip-Hop & Dancehall)

Named the Queen of South East Asian Hiphop & Reggae by Vice /Noisey, MAS1A is an artist that inspires fans whereever she grabs a mic. Her hit Warriors Tongue was sampled by iconic American DJ / producer Bass Nectar for the title track of Fast and Furious 8. This is not the first major success for this Singaporean Warrior, having “savagely defeated” her opponent at the Chang Urban Pulse Rap Battle in 3 different languages of English, Chinese and French. MAS1A’s career as a Hiphop artist is extensive: she became the first female to be nominated for an MTV Canada award, has worked with the likes of Dr Dre, Pharrell Williams, The Game, RZA (Wu Tang Clan) and John Frusciante (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and honoured by VIMA SE Asian Music Awards for best Female Artist. She brings Ragga flavour into her music influenced by time spent in Jamaica working at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong Studios and collaborating with Reggae legends such as Sizzla, Lady Saw and Dubtonic Kru. She is also the founder and creative director of Singapura Dub Club, the premier island culture events company in Singapore and a hub bringing Asian Ragga flavours to the rest of the world. She is currently working on her 4th studio album, executive produced by Major Lazer engineer Richie Beretta slated for release Spring 2018.
