Dr. Nichole Rustin-Paschal, Distinguished Guest Lecturer & Dr. Katchie Cartwright's Brazilian Quartet
Nichole Rustin-Paschal earned a Ph.D. in American Studies from New York University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia. She talks about her new book, The Kind of Man I Am: Jazzmasculinity and the World of Charles Mingus Jr. (Wesleyan 2017) a gendered cultural history of jazz in the postwar period. A recent transplant to San Antonio, Nichole has taught at Kansas City Academy, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Williams College, and New York University. In addition to her writing and teaching, Nichole is an advocate for the underserved in her education, First Amendment, and privacy law practice.
Katchie Cartwright's doctorate in Music comes from The Graduate School of The City University of New York. A two-time Fulbright award grantee, Katchie moved from New York in 2006 to teach at Northwest Vista College in San Antonio, where she also performs as a freelance flutist, and with her jazz-world project, Le Monde Caché. Katchie's Brazilian quartet features acclaimed San Antonio guitarist Polly Harrison, with Austin-based Brazilian artists Marco Antonio Santos (guitar) and Bruno Vinezof (percussion).
